Our Story

The Gate is a daughter church of St. Paul Lutheran in Ankeny, IA.  St. Paul called pastor and church planter Aaron Hannemann from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in May of 2015.  He has recruited a team of missionaries from St. Paul and the community to embark on this mission.  Public worship for The Gate was officially launched on September 18th, 2016.

The bottom line is that we as the people of God are called to share the Good News of God’s love poured out for us in Jesus Christ, and planting churches is one of the best ways to reach those far from God.

The Gate’s name comes from John 10:9 where Jesus says, “I am the gate, whoever enters through me will be saved.”  It is only through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection that we humans are reconciled to God.  It is through Jesus that we receive abundant life here and now and eternal life in the age to come.  “I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10b).

Pastor Aaron grew up as a pastor's kid and loved being part of a strong faith community.  In college he had some significant doubts about what he knew of the Christian story.  God worked through this experience to refine his faith and set him down a path of proclaiming the Truth of God's love in Jesus Christ to the world.  He graduated Concordia Seminary in St. Louis with a Masters of Divinity in 2015.  His first call was through St. Paul Lutheran, Ankeny where he started working with them to plant The Gate.  He enjoys spending time with his wife, Kaela and wrestling his two sons, Jonah (3) and Samuel (1).  He also enjoys anything that gets him out into God's creation like hunting, fishing, hiking, playing sports, and gardening.
